Hmmm, that was just a little bit too much gushing there, wasn't it?

Label me: over the top reviewer # 33, prone to absurd level of subjectivity following rare instance of relatives getting him out of the house to an actual musical performance.

Pics didn't turn out due to altered state/lights/etc, but at least here's one to show I was there, accounting for inappropriate levels of euphoria induced drivel in late night post:

Not enough gushing. Weeks is an animal and isn't it a revelation to hear Clapton and WInwood possibly singing and playing better than EVER? Instead of being old and tired and just running through the hits, these guys are taking care of unfinished business and truly delivering some of the best live music of their careers. It's great to see them push one another and a huge part of that is the work of Mr. Weeks (who has played with everyone - check out a very partial list at his wiki entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willie_Weeks).
As you know, I caught that final night of MSG and was truly blown away and did not hesitate to grab tickets for Monday in Oakland (although still recuperating from my man crush on Nels Cline who I saw last night at the Mt Winery).

Discussing the merits of a great 68 show is fun, but seeing live music that delivers in the here and now is what it's all about. Truly glad you had a phenomenal live experience - they are too few and far between these days. Now, next time Richard Thompson comes around your way, I hope I've gained some cred to point you in his direction.....

Outstanding. They are completely on top of their game and the show had a nice effortless flow where they hit all kinds of musical terrain. A real family vibe reminiscent of other great bands where the audience and the band play off one another and where a large section of the audience already knew all the "new" tunes not set to be released until this coming Tuesday. I cut and pasted the San Jose Mercury News' review below. I'm going to stream the Greek show starting in about 20 minutes.

Review: Wilco utterly in sweet control at Saratoga's Mountain Winery

Even in the bucolic setting of Saratoga's Mountain Winery, under beautiful California stars, Wilco singer Jeff Tweedy found something to gripe about. A customer up front dared to ask for more vocals, and Tweedy proceeded to needle him, with good-natured crankiness, for the rest of the concert.

"This is not the show on the schedule I expected to lose control at," he said.

In truth, though, Tweedy was utterly in control Friday night, leading the band of his dreams in front of adoring fans and his loving wife (to whom he dedicated "I'm the Man Who Loves You") on familiar favorites and new material strong enough to stick on first listen.

As the band prepares for Tuesday's release of "Wilco," it seems to have emerged from its brilliant but troubled adolescence — full of drugs, emotional breakups and wild mood swings — into a happy, productive adulthood.

This six-piece lineup, now with five years under its belt, has the chops to pull off anything it wants, from free jazz to stone country, but it also knows when to leave well enough alone. No longer does Tweedy feel the need to counter every bit of beauty with a dollop of ugliness, to cut every cup of compassion with a smidgen of sinister.

Light vocals

For what it's worth, the impertinent patron was right. The vocals were too low early on, causing the lyrics of the introductory "Wilco (the Song)" to be essentially thrown away, with few catching the new song's charming, self-referential punch line: "Wilco will love you, baby."

But after a solid "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," a slow-burning "Bull Black Nova" made a strong case for the new stuff, as Tweedy and lead guitarist Nels Cline locked into an epic electric-ax tangle over insistent electronic blips.

The set list focused on material from this century, with only a couple of numbers from the band's first incarnation, which emerged in 1994 out of the influential alt-country band Uncle Tupelo. (The country-tinged "Forget the Flowers," with Cline chicken-pickin' enthusiastically, was a particular treat.)

At the halfway point, the band began pulling out one fan favorite after another: "California Stars," "Jesus, Etc.," "Handshake Drugs." In this context, the new "You Never Know" already sounded like a comfortable old favorite, with Cline spinning out perfect George Harrison slide licks on a double-neck guitar.

Cline and drummer Glenn Kotche were the standout instrumentalists — both technically accomplished players, each of whom have managed to keep one foot in the garage. But Tweedy and utility man Pat Sansone more than carried their weight on guitar, leading to some scintillating three-way action, and keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen provided solid support from the back of the stage. John Stirratt was steady as always on bass and backing vocals.

As the show progressed, Tweedy went from reserved to amusingly cantankerous to downright chipper by the time "Heavy Metal Drummer" and "Hummingbird" popped up in the first encore.

A final blast through "I'm a Wheel" put an exclamation mark on the show after nearly two full hours of music.

Opening act
Austin's Okkervil River made the most of a 30-minute opening set that regrettably began with the stands 80 percent empty. Lead singer Will Scheff loves literature as much as he loves rock 'n' roll, as illustrated by "John Allyn Smith Sails," a song about the suicide of poet John Berryman that morphs, brilliantly, into "The Sloop John B."

Okkervil River's playing doesn't quite measure up to its material, with newest member Lauren Gurgiolo me rely adequate on lead guitar and the group's attempts to bring abrasive noise into the sonic palette feeling awkward and forced. But when the band plays to its strengths, quietly intense and smart as a whip, it's a delight.

But I LIKE the drug fueled emotional breakups and wild mood swings.It made for their by far best albums

Yea, I agree. But live they play a lot of that material and the new stuff is good live (full on George Harrison rip off on the one tune). They did country (Nels on pedal steel), rock, insect fear dissonant feedback, folk singalong, etc. They are playing great - like a well seasoned team. And they seem to be having a blast together. That's a nice change from some shows I saw in the past. Then again, that may be as much a factor of maturity (and relative sobriety) than anything else.

well without a doubt they're one of the best out there. One of the things I find amazing is they can do what most studio geniouses can't - duplicate the sonic perfection of their studio stuff but they can do it in a way that is completely real and spontaneous not note for note. I can name a few bands that can duplicate their studio mastery but I can't think of any others ever that could make it still be spontaneous.

Going over the top is OK, (just remember to duck), those guys ARE pretty good.

I saw Clapton once, he jammed with the house band at a sober musicians picnic up off of Mulholland in L.A. I was about ten feet away, no huge crowd. '94?
